Today let’s talk about fear of discovery.

Have you ever felt like you can’t tell people who you really are?

In my case, I couldn’t because I didn’t know who I really was. A friend once told me she wanted to shake me when I didn’t realize what a nice guy I was. I’m sure I looked at her with a puzzled expression, because I didn’t get it. I felt like I had to hide from people because if they discovered who I really was, they wouldn’t like me. So I would put on a mask – the clown, the rescuer, the fixer, the helpless one. The mask covered the real me – but I also lost touch with myself in the process. Recovery for me has been a process of growing to believe I’m a likeable and worthwhile person, which has meant releasing old, negative messages from my childhood.

Have you ever felt like you were hiding your true self?
